Andrea Sutcliffe, Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care at the Care Quality Commission.

Today my brother Adrian would have been 45. He never got past 35. His death by suicide had a profound impact on my family and the passing years do not diminish the loss.

I wrote about Adrian’s death nearly 3 years ago when I was Chief Executive at SCIE. Then I emphasised the importance of moving integration from empty words into meaningful reality and the need to speak out about suicide. We still need to do that.

On Adrian’s birthday last year I shared his story with managers at CQC at our Leadership Conference as we launched our values, linking that experience to how all of us at CQC do our jobs

Excellence — we need to be the best we can be because people like my brother must have confidence in what we do and rely upon us to hold people to account when that is necessary.

Caring — we care for the people who use services, the staff who support them and each other. Each person using services is an individual and should be treated with dignity and respect. That’s what I wanted for Adrian, and that’s what I want for everyone who needs care and support for whatever reason. We have such an important role in making that happen.

Integrity — doing the right thing is vital. It means we need to have confidence to celebrate the best that health and social care can do, but also to tackle poor care when we see it.

Teamwork — we accomplish so much more by working together and with others. If the team around Adrian had worked together better, who knows if the outcome could have been different? We need to make sure that we do not make that mistake within CQC and working with our partners at local and national levels.

Today I just want to honour his memory.

All of us who work at CQC and in health and social care will have our personal stories that motivate us and strengthen our resolve to make a difference. Times are tough in lots of ways but we should never lose touch with that essential humanity; the need for the people who use services to be at the heart of everything we do.

Happy birthday Adrian.
